WEST FARGO (KFGO) – Cleanup was underway Thursday after a tanker truck caused a large diesel fuel spill on the northeast side of West Fargo. As of mid-afternoon, the city reported that streets where the leak took place were open again.
Fire Department Battalion Chief Levi Nesvold says a passerby reported the spill shortly after midnight onto a stretch roadway near the intersection at 7th Avenue Northeast and 13th Street Northeast.
Considered a hazardous condition, fire crews were able to stop the leak and offload the remainder of the diesel fuel from the tanker into another truck.
The West Fargo Public Works Department was called in to lay down sand to start the mop-up of an estimated 1,000 feet of the fuel. There was a heavy scent of diesel fuel in the area.
Nesvold says it’s lucky the spill was controlled by remaining on the roadway and using hazmat mitigation to keep the fuel from flowing into drains.
The fire department was assisted by the police department, public works and the Fargo Fire Department.
